"What am I supposed to feel if I trust in Jesus?"
Ah...and this is important...it's NOT about what you feel. It's about Who you know.
If you come from a background of heavy-handed religion, for example, we know that feelings and emotional experiences are often an important part of your religious experience. But biblical Christianity is not about feelings, or even "religion" for that matter; it is about truth, and a relationship with the true Jesus. Feelings come and go, and they don't always mean what we think they mean, and they certainly can't always be trusted.
This is not to say that we do not experience true joy, wonder, and excitement in our relationship with Jesus. Certainly we do! But it's important to recognize that good feelings--even those really strong, positive ones--are not what ground us in truth. And they even don't always come from God. Therefore faith cannot be about feelings, it is about truth!
When you first put your trust in Jesus, you might feel something powerful, or you might not feel anything up front. But that's not really the point. Instead, the point is, have you put your trust in Jesus? Have you taken that step that says, "Yes, Lord, I want to know you!"? If so, that's what matters.
So please don't get too worked up about how you're supposed to feel. Your first steps of faith will include lots of discovery, a hunger to learn more about God and to study His word, the Bible. But it's not about feelings, which are here today and gone tomorrow. After all, you're in this for the long haul, and Jesus is right there with you, through all the joys and sorrows of this life, until the time when He calls you to Himself, where you can enjoy Him for eternity! After all, that's what you were created for. |
